Sailor Uranus Sword by meanlilkitty Sailor Uranus Sword by meanlilkitty
Made for a commission, this is made of layers of poplar wood with wood beads and plastic jewels that I made custom molds for. For those who don't know, this is Sailor Uranus' sword from Sailor Moon. Haha it was fun trying to keep this from looking TOO silly with the jewels on the blade and all, but I am pleased with the end result

Need props? I do commissions!

This is beautiful! I really want to make my own sword :') May I ask where you got the poplar wood?

Thank you! You can find poplar in the hard wood section of Home Depot or Lowes for a little less than $4/ft

Oh! Awesome! :) Thank you! And may I ask what tools you used? Sorry, I'm a noob when it comes to wood carving :') Haha

No worries, a jigsaw with a thin blade, a orbiting hand sander, and a band sander are my basic tools

How big is the sword compared to a person? I have seen some Space Swords that are almost as big as the person cosplaying Uranus and for me I think that is too big. lol

The details are beautiful and I love the fine paint you've given it. It looks just like the anime one!

Thank you! It does not look silly at all, I love it, it looks very VERY cool!!! Just like Haruka (Sailor Uranus)! :la:

Hey I cosplay Sailor Uranus and I think your sword is awesome. I was wondering if you could do a tutorial of how you made it.

So glad you liked it! Sadly I really didn't take any progress photos, so I can't show my work. Basically I just cut out the main outline sans the balls out of poplar wood, then used a band sander to make the edges on the blade. Once that was done, I used the sword as it's own template and cut out two more layers for the hand guard, one layer on each side, then a layer for the lip on the handguard. After that I took a dremmel and used several different bits to grind the shapes down and then made grooves in the wood where the beads were going to go. The beads are simple wood ones I got from Joannes and I used hot glue to get them in place. The grooves will help keep them stable so they won't pop off at first resistance. For the ones on the handguard, I put a thin nail into the end of the handguard, and then filled the bead with glue and mounted it on the nail to give it more strength. After that it was just doing final sanding, prepping the wood with several layers of oil-based polyurethane, more sanding, and then painting with metallic gold and silver paint called Viva Colour Precious Metal Effect Paint. The jewels on the handle I cast out of plastic with custom molds I made out of Putty Magic and then painted with acrylic and glued onto the blade with gel super glue.
Let me know if you need any more advice and I'll be happy to help!
